What is Ham Radio?
Ham radio, also known as Amateur Radio, is a non-commercial radio service that permits licensed individuals to communicate around the world everyday! Ham radio operators enjoy the freedom of technical experimentation with their radio equipment including building their own rigs! Wouldn’t it be cool to speak with an astronaut in space? Ham radio operators have done that too! Most importantly, ham radio saves lives by augmenting public safety communications in times of disasters. Ham radio connects people from all walks of life, and it is a way to make life-long friends!
Get Licensed!
In order to transmit on a ham radio, you are required to attain an amateur radio license from the Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.). You can learn more about the different license types, find study materials and classes, and locate testing centers by visiting the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) website.
Additionally, the Tampa Amateur Radio Club is available for testing on the last Thursday of the month (which may be adjusted for holidays). All levels of licensing exams are provided and testing begins at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $14.00 cash and correct change is appreciated. You must bring a valid form of legal ID, such as a driver’s license, military ID, or passport. Also, if applicable, please bring your existing amateur radio license and/or any CSCE forms.
